Nairobi County Assembly Member, Absalom Odhiambo Onyango, aka Matakwei, was interrogated by DCI detectives on Monday night over allegations of incitement. The arrest came after Matakwei made controversial statements at a rally in Jacaranda, Nairobi.

Matakwei, who serves in a ward in Starehe Constituency, was picked up at the NCIC offices in Nairobi and briefly held at Kiambu Police Station before being transferred to the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road, Nairobi News confirms.

In his speech, Matakwei called on the opposition to hold demonstrations to remove President William Ruto from power and claimed to have defeated the influence of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

His lawyer, Apollo Mboya, said they had already agreed to provide a statement to NCIC on Wednesday, but the arrest occurred while documents were being photocopied.

“When the documents were being photocopied, we suspect that it was at that moment that they called the DCI who came in and picked the client,” the lawyer said.

NCIC accused Matakwei of incitement earlier in the day and summoned him to appear before the commission. The commission’s chairman, Samuel Kobia, warned that the current political activities in the country were dangerous and could result in chaos.

Matakwei is expected to be presented in court on Tuesday, January 31, 2023.
