Media fraternity and politicians pay moving tribute to Rita Tinina
Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has sent her condolences over the untimely demise of renowned NTV journalist Rita Tinina, that has left the media fraternity in shock.
Rita’s lifeless body was discovered at her residence in Kileleshwa on Sunday, March 17, afternoon, sparking an outpouring of grief and disbelief among colleagues and friends.
Tributes have poured in from across the country, highlighting her significant contributions to journalism and her unwavering professionalism.
Expressing her condolences through her X platform, Passaris reflected on Rita’s impactful career, stating:
“Saddened to hear about the passing of Rita Tinina, whose voice resonated across Kenya. Her professionalism and dedication to journalism will be greatly missed. Sending my deepest condolences to her family, her friends, and the media fraternity.”

The Nation Media Group, Rita’s employer, confirmed the heartbreaking news on March 17, with Group Editorial Director Joe Ageyo addressing the tragic loss and urging calm as investigations continue.
“This morning we received the sad news that our colleague Rita Tinina had passed away in her house,” Ageyo stated.
“She was expected to be in the office today but did not show up. The information we have so far is that she was fine all of yesterday but unfortunately, was found unresponsive this morning. The family has requested privacy at this difficult time. This is indeed a tragic development and I request us to be calm as we await more information.”
Politicians and fellow journalists have also offered their condolences, underscoring Rita’s profound impact on the media landscape.
Among them, Governor of Homa Bay County, Gladys Wanga expressed her sorrow, stating: “Really sad news on Rita Tinina’s passing. My deepest condolences to her family. Rest well Rita.”
Dennis Itumbi, in his tribute, honored Rita’s legacy as a journalist, remarking: “Safiri salama Rita Tinina. In journalism, you remain a great journalist. Despite representing major stations while I worked for smaller media houses, your humility stood out as we covered events together.”

Described by her friends in the industry as a remarkable individual, Rita’s legacy transcends her professional achievements, leaving an enduring imprint on the hearts and minds of her peers.
Journalist Lindah Oguttu, in an emotional message shared on social media platform X, paid tribute to her former colleague, reminiscing about Rita’s key role in her own career journey.
“I am who I am because I stood on her shoulders while at NTV. My T9. Go well my darling. Rita Tinina, the hand that held mine and never let go. I am broken….Rest mami,” Lindah Oguttu penned.
Echoing the sentiments of shock and sorrow, former K24 journalist Eric Njoka expressed disbelief at the news, stating, “Oh My RITA TININA!!! Unbelievable if it is true. I’m shaken.”
Sports journalist Carol Radull conveyed her sadness at the loss, saying, “Gosh, This is sad. Rest in peace Rita Tinina.”
Lilian Muli of Citizen TV mourned the loss of her media sister, recalling Rita’s exceptional talent and professionalism.
“Life is fickle. I am saddened by the death of my media sister, Rita Tinina. Her writing style and reporting was undoubtedly one of the best of our times as human interest journalists. She was versatile and could execute most stories with such professional ease. RIP Rita,” Muli lamented.

Even from the corridors of power, Rita’s impact was felt.
Hussein Mohamed, State House Spokesperson, recounted a moment of kindness from Rita during his early days in journalism.
“Rita helped me file a story when our equipment failed at an EAC Heads of State Summit in Arusha during Kibaki’s presidency. It was my first interaction with her, as she was already a household name in media, while I was a rookie at the time. Nonetheless, she displayed grace then, as she always has. My condolences to friends and family,” Mohamed shared.
