Meet ex-Murang’a MP with 2 PHDs, masters, degrees and diplomas


Politician Humphrey Njuguna’s academic qualification caught the attention of many after he was listed as one of the applicants for the Parliamentary Service Commission jobs.

Mr Njuguna has scooped nine certificates ranging from diploma to post-graduate degrees. The 62-year-old has two diplomas, two degrees, two master’s and a specialization, and two PhDs.

Since joining the campus in 1983, Mr Njuguna has been studying till 2017, when he was awarded his second post-graduate degree from the University of Nairobi (UON).

Here is his educational background journey;

From 1983 to 1986, he did a Bachelor of Arts in Land Econ from the UON and then did a Diploma from the Institution of Surveyors of Kenya in 1990.

He then did his Bachelor of Legislative Law Honours (LLB Hons) from UON from 1999 to 2003, then a Diploma in the Kenya School of Law from 2003 to 2005.

On the side, he also pursued his Master of Law (LLM) in International Trade and Investment Law from 2003 to 2005.

He did a Certificate of Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit from JKUAT from 2008 to 2009 and still pursued an Executive Masters of Business Administration from 2008 to 2010.

In 2010, he pursued his PhD in Entrepreneurship till 2015 but enrolled for his PhD in Law from UON in 2012 and cleared in 2017.

While pursuing the two postgraduate degrees, Mr Njuguna also served as the MP Gatanga constituency from 2013 to 2017.

Back in 2022, Dr Humphrey Njuguna called for concerted efforts to fight fake degrees, noting that it touches on the merits of higher education.

Genuine academic papers are a key requirement for job seekers, including for key positions in the public service and the county and national governments.

The EACC has urged universities to end the challenge of fake degrees.
