Miguna dumps running mate, picks a new one as IEBC rejects his papers

Aspiring Nairobi Governor Miguna Miguna’s nomination papers were on Thursday morning rejected by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission officials owing to a technicality.

Mr Miguna shocked journalists and his supporters after he turned up for the nomination verification with a different running mate from the one he had unveiled two weeks ago.

According to Joseph Mele, the IEBC Nairobi County Returning Officer sitting at the Kasarani Stadium, Mr Miguna presented 2,000 signatures of those supporting his bid in wrong format.

Mr Mele added that Mr Miguna has been given a chance to correct the anomaly.

“We only accept the signatures in excel format, he brought his in a JPEG format. He will first have to correct that,” the IEBC official insisted.

Miguna has dropped former student leader James Gathungu as his running mate and replaced him with Karen Wangenye.

Mr Miguna had two weeks ago unveiled James Karihe Gathungu, a former Laikipia University student leader, at a low key ceremony.

“This candidature is distinctly different from that of Kidero and Sonko,” Mr Miguna had said of his partnership with Mr Gathungu.
