Miguna: Why I’m better than Orengo at practising law

Kenyan lawyer who is still in exile Miguna Miguna has weighed into the trending topic in Kenya about the Supreme Court case battle on the Presidential Election results.

Miguna, who is among the legal team representing President-elect William Ruto in the case challenging his presidential win said that he is way better than senior counsel James Orengo.

On Monday, the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition team led by its presidential candidate Raila Odinga and Martha Karua filed the case challenging the outcome that saw William Ruto of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) being declared as the President-Elect.

Mr Orengo, a common figure in Mr Odinga’s cases, told Kenyans that they should relax and wait for the final verdict, adding that they will win the case since they have enough evidence.

Kenyans on social media questioned the capability of Miguna in the case, comparing him with Orengo who led Mr Odinga’s team to the Supreme Court in 2017 where the Presidential-election was nullified.

In his response, Miguna told Kenyans that he is up to the task and that he has practised his law not only in Kenya but even abroad.

“For those asking whether I can win a case against James Orengo, here is my answer.

I practice law up to the Supreme Court of Canada stage in addition to being an Advocate in Kenya, whereas James Orengo cannot even appear at the Small Claims Court in Canada,” Mr Miguna said.

Mr Miguna was exiled in 2018 for taking part in swearing in Mr Odinga as the People’s President in the disputed 2017 repeat election.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said that Mr Miguna did not have valid documents to be in Kenya.

However, Miguna challenged the move in court, saying that he is a Kenyan citizen by birth and that at no point did he lose his Kenyan citizenship.

He recently said that he will be in the country after the President-elect is sworn in as the 5th President when he will be in a position to lift the Red alert that blocks him from travelling not only to Kenya but to any country in Africa.

Senior counsel Orengo is the Siaya County Governor-elect in the concluded election.
