Mixed fortunes as Uhuru now blames Police of interfereing in politics

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has accused the police of engaging in politics.

While addressing the media at the Jubilee headquarters in Nairobi on April 26, 2023, the former head state insisted that the police are an independent body and should focus on matters of building the nation rather than privatizing.

“We want to inform them (police officers) to go back to their stations and not to be used by people who want to cause chaos. We have a mechanism as a political party with which to solve our problems and we shall solve. We shall have our meetings as and when. The membership will decide the future of the party,” said a visibly disturbed Mr Kenyatta.

“So, I received a phone call from Kioni and update on what had transpired. I came to stand with him and our followers. I have no other duty than to protect our people’s rights. Let’s live in peace. We are peaceful people and wish to live in a peaceful country in co-existence with all the people of our party,” he added.

The chaos ensued at party offices after party officials allied to Kanini Kega and journalists were barred from entering the offices, leading to a commotion.

Supporters then engaged police officers in running battles in attempts to breach the security barriers.

Incidentally, in 2021 the public fallout between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto went a notch higher after the State downgraded Ruto’s security by withdrawing elite General Service Unit (GSU) officers guarding his residences.

Ruto consistently accused police during Uhuru’s reign of being unprofessional.

In 2021, President Ruto, then working as a Deputy President, cautioned the police against being used to cause chaos ahead of the August 2022 polls.

President Ruto reshuffled the security leadership immediately after assuming office, appointing Japhet Koome as the Inspector General of Police and Mohammed Amin as the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
