Mixed reactions as Safaricom’s M-Pesa awards customers cash
A section of Kenyans has taken to KoX (formerly Twitter), questioning Safaricom’s offer sent to their M-Pesa accounts.
The offer started trickling into the said customers’ accounts on Thursday, January 11, 2024, mid-morning.
Some were awarded Sh150, Sh100, while others received Sh20, a move Kenyans are questioning for its motive.
“What is Mpesa Offers? Ni kama wanatuma Kabej…” @David_ _ _Mbugua posed on X.
Through a Safaricom M-Pesa screenshot shared, Mbugua revealed that he received Sh100 at 10:47 AM.
@MseewaNduthi also confirmed receiving Sh100 at 11:47 AM on Thursday, January 11.
“What the heck is Mpesa offers, and mbona wamenitumia pesa (Why have they sent it to me)?” @MseewaNduthi sought to know.
@Shirley_Sein wondered why Safaricom opted to send her Sh20 instead of Sh200.
“What or who is MPESA offers? Why are they giving me 20 bob? Mimi surely na hii miaka yangu yote (Surely, at my age, they send me such an amount of money)?” probed the money transfer platform client.

“Confirmed. You have received Ksh20.00 from M-PESA OFFERS 4090193 on 11/1/24 at 12:35 PM. New M-PESA balance is Ksh… Separate personal and business funds through Pochi la Biashara on *334#. Nani mwingine amepata hiyo message? I’m happy to receive the Sh20. Thank you, MPesa,” @NahashoKimemia lauded the company.
Apparently, the award has the same M-Pesa offers number, 4090193, for all the customers who have confirmed receiving the funds.
The offers came a day after the money transfer platform experienced delays in making transactions.
Kenyans complained about the technical hitch, causing inconveniences, especially for those who pay for services, goods, and commodities using mobile phones.
Safaricom had not issued a notice regarding the issue.
As of 2022, the largest communication service provider in East and Central Africa boasted of operating with 32 million active monthly M-Pesa users.
