Moses Kuria to counter Nasa with motion for tough electoral reforms

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria says he will push for electoral reforms in parliament ahead of the forthcoming presidential polls, a message likely to instigate fresh confrontation between the government and the opposition.

The controversial legislator announced his intentions via Facebook page on Saturday, a day after the Supreme Court nullified President Uhuru Kenyatta’s victory and called for fresh elections within 60 days.

The reforms, Kuria explained, will involve reverting transmission of election results from electronic to manual.

While bragging about the popularity he could amass in Parliament, Mr Kuria said the reforms will also target the Judiciary to ensure atleast a vote of five (of the seven sitting judges) is required to overturn results.

NULLIFIED ELECTION

On Friday, four out of the six judges present supported the decision to nullify President Kenyatta’s election while two dissented.

“My first business in parliament. No more electronic transmission of results. We count all votes at the constituency and declare them there,” Kuria said.

“The Supreme Court will require minimum five judges to overturn results. I will easily get support of 233 members of Parliament,” he added.

Had the reforms Kuria intends to push for been in place, President Kenyatta’s victory would have been upheld by the Supreme Court.
