MP resolves Eastleigh traders’ stalemate with tax collector

Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan has brokered a deal between Eastleigh traders and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) that has ended protests that saw businesses close on Wednesday and Thursday.

Mr Hassan has disclosed that KRA Commissioner General John Njiraini’s intervention helped to put an end to the go-slow.

“Successfully brokered a win-win solution btwn Eastleigh traders & KRA. The Eastleigh Shutdown is now over & the hub is once again opened for business. Many thanks to RC Nairobi Wilson Njega and CG KRA John Njiraini for their decisive action,” he tweet.

The end of the stalemate offers a reprieve for shoppers who were on unable to access fabrics, clothes and foodstuffs at the business hub.

Eastleigh traders had closed malls and shops to protest increased levies on their imports.

The traders, led by Eastleigh Business Community chairman Sheikh Ibrahim Hussein, on Wednesday said KRA had arbitrarily increased tax for 40 feet containers from Sh3 million to Sh12 million.

The traders said thousands of their containers were stuck at the Mombasa Port as they were unable to afford the new levies.
