Murder most foul: Slain Nyamira teacher’s horrifying last moments

By Ruth Mbula January 2nd, 2023 3 min read

Police in Nyamira County have revealed the gruesome details of how Nyamira teacher Ezekiel Nkeere Gitangwa met his death. Mr Gitangwa’s mutilated body was found on Sunday, two days after he went missing.

According to the police, the deceased was dismembered with all his limbs ripped off from his body, in what they described as a “totally mutilated body.’’

The 47-year-old teacher had been reported missing by his wife Ms Gladys Bonareri Achoki on Friday, December 30, 2022.

The police said the body, which was discovered in a house belonging to a nurse in Nyamira County, had many things placed on it, ostensibly to cover it. Some plastic bags, similar to those used to put waste in hospitals, were beside it.

Police believe those behind the gruesome killing may have planned to butcher the body into small pieces, put the body parts in the bags and then drop them around.

Police have also linked the teacher’s murder to a love triangle involving the deceased, a nurse, who is missing, and a Member of Nyamira County Assembly (MCA). The fugitive nurse has been marked by the police as the main suspect and asked to surrender immediately.

“This house belongs to a nurse. Madam, you are safer running to the police than being out there. Members of the public are very annoyed and agitated. This house is yours and we have been trying to trace you, but you have switched off your phones. We are only trailing her,” said Nyamira South Sub County criminal investigations officer Mr Paul Makonge.

“We are asking her to report to any police post, station or officer, for the sake of her own safety and our investigations,” he added.

Mr Makonge, who was addressing the media in Nyamira on Monday, said they are also pursuing another man who they also suspect had a hand in the murder.

“This man comes from the same area and we have information that he may have been involved in the murder. We are asking him to also surrender,” said the DCI officer.

“We have secured the house for investigation and we are calling on members of the public to be patient as we continue with the probe into the heinous murder of the teacher,” said Mr Makonge.

Mr Nkeere went missing on December, 30, 2022 before his body was found hidden in a room used for poultry keeping. The body was covered with a carpet.

Police had to break into the house of the Nyamaiya Health Centre-based nurse to access the body. But the health worker was not in the house.

“We received a report from the teacher’s wife Gladys Bonareri Achoki that her husband was missing,” the police said.

Police explained that after the report of the missing person was done, they started investigations at the lapse of 24 hours.

“We started investigations and we tried to locate where he could have been last seen, because his phone had been switched off. To our amazement, we established that his last location was in some building in Kisii after which his phone was switched off,” said Mr Makonge.

The DCI officer further explained that after further investigations, they discovered that a boda boda rider had ferried the teacher to Egesieri village in West Mugirango constituency, Nyamira County.

“It was not certain where he went from there, so we launched a search. Our investigation’s took us to the house of the nurse. It was locked and we broke in. We found the totally mutilated body there,” said the DCI officer.

He added that they also ascertained that the slain teacher took himself to Egesieri village, because he was the one who asked the boda boda rider to transport him there.
