Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has explained the circumstances that led to his heckling at a football tournament in Baringo on November 26, 2023.

A viral clip on social media captured the youthful CS being booed off the dais as he attempted to address the crowd during the Governor’s Cup in Baringo County.

The crowd was heard chanting ‘Ruto must go.’

“The men’s finals were postponed after Baringo Youth FC from Kabarnet, Baringo Central, protested their loss against Chemogoch FC from Mogotio,” explained Murkomen.

“The officials did their best to resolve the matter, but the Baringo central team were not satisfied. Being the home team, and with their fans being more than half of the stadium, it was impossible to proceed with the match. The players and the fans poured their frustrations on FKF officials, especially one Mr. Ruto, whom they felt, was not addressing their concerns.”

In reflection, Murkomen highlighted the emotive nature of sports, particularly football, which he deemed a beautiful and popular game capable of fostering peace.

Despite the incident, he remained committed to promoting the positive aspects of sports, emphasizing its potential to unite communities.

“Sports can be emotive, but football is a beautiful and popular game that can be used to foster peace. A friend who followed the incident joked that we should stick to athletics,” he said.

Murkomen has been in the media spotlight in recent times in the wake of a public spat with Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei. The Senator, among other issues, has publicly accused the CS of preferring Chinese contractors to perform casual roles in road construction at the expense of local ones.

Murkomen also found the going tough when he appeared before the Senate last week when he was put to task with a number of Senators including Kakamega’s Boni Khalwale on the construction and revamp of Kakamega airport.

The incident in Baringo comes barely a week after another Cabinet Secretary namely Davis Chirchir (Energy) was publicly heckled at an event in Bomet in the presence of President William Ruto.
