Museveni reveals why his government is ‘bribing’ citizens to relocate from wetlands
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni made a shocking revelation of how his government has resorted to ‘bribing’ its citizens who have encroached the country’s wetlands so as they could relocate to other areas.
The Ugandan at the same time seemed to urge the Kenyan government to consider the same approach as opposed to forcefully removing them.
President Museveni made the revelation in speech when the Blue Economy Conference opened on Monday at the Kenyatta International Convention Center, Nairobi.
CASH TOKENS
Delivering his speech at the conference which was presided by President Uhuru Kenyatta,
Museveni revealed that his government has been dishing out cash tokens as bribes to the citizens occupying Uganda’s wetlands so as to persuade them to leave the area in order to protect the water catchment areas.
BRIBERY
“We are trying to bribe our people who invaded the wetlands to get out. Give them money, please get out of the wetlands. It’s a type of bribe that is better than crude (way of) removing them. Because that will also cause other problems because we need votes because if it’s not the side of votes those people would move freely” the 74 year old echoed.
Museveni was among 11 heads of state who are attending Kenya’s inaugural ocean economy summit in the country.
The presidents formed part of more than 11,000 delegates who confirmed participation in the forums according to Foreign Affairs Minister Monica Juma.
