Muthama to record statement over Uhuru ‘sweetheart’ remarks

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery on Thursday directed that Senator Johnson Muthama records a statement for his remarks during the Cord rally at Uhuru Park, Nairobi, on Wednesday

The CS directed that the senator immediately records a statement at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on the matter.

The Machakos senator will be questioned, among other remarks, for referring to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Devolution Secretary Anne Waiguru in a manner deemed unbecoming.

Mr Nkaissery said he expected the National Cohesion and Integration Commission to open investigations on the inciting allegations made by the senator during the rally.

He accused the Senator of making a speech “that was a litany of incitement to Kenyans.”

“Mr Muthama has made a habit of verbally attacking State officers in a manner that is intended to undermine cohesion and national unity for political gain.” he said.

“Such conduct should not be confused with the rights of expression that every Kenyan is guaranteed. It is, therefore, imperative that investigations into the speech and its intent begin in earnest.”

Mr Nkaissery termed Mr Muthama’s pronouncements at the rally calling for “unconstitutional change of government, and calling Kenyans to die to defend their rights” as a serious breach of the basic tenets of the constitution.

On Thursday, Jubilee MPs asked Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet to arrest Mr within the next 24 hours for insulting the President and Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru during the opposition rally.

“They insulted the President (and) CS Anne Waiguru in a manner that is unbecoming,” TNA party chairman Johnson Sakaja said.

In his statement on Friday, Mr Nkaissery said Muthama should be investigated for making defamatory statements against state officers “through the use of salacious, obscene, indecent, crude, lewd, and vulgar language.”
