Mututho is back

The man loathed by Nairobians who love their liquor has finally been given the full mandate to head the agency charged with checking drinking excesses and drug abuse.

John Michael Njenga Mututho, was on Wednesday gazetted as the new chairman of National Authority for the campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada).

He takes over from Dr Franck Njenga whose term expired in September.

The gazettement brings the curtains down on the saga surrounding Mututho’s appointment which had earlier ran into headwinds when it emerged that Parliament had not approved his appointment.

Consequently President Kenyatta revoked the appointment and referred his nomination to Parliament for clearance.

A parliamentary committee which interviewed Mututho rejected him on grounds that he had a case against him pending in court.

However when the matter came to Parliament last week, members backed Mutuhto’s appointment saying the integrity issues cited were not adequate to bar him from assuming office.

The MPs argued that Mr Mututho was innocent until proved guilty in the case pending in the High Court.
