My eyesight fails when I meet oncoming cars

Dear doc,

I struggle to see well when driving, particularly when there is a lot of light from oncoming vehicles. What could be the issue?

While anyone can be ‘blinded’ by high beam lights from oncoming traffic, most people with good eyesight can drive well in normal lighting.

If you find that you struggle to see clearly where there is a lot of light, for instance when watching a movie in the theatre, reading from a projected slide presentation, you might have a condition called ‘astigmatism’.

In astigmatism, the cornea is abnormally shaped, which tends to allow too much light into the eye causing lack of clarity. You should see a doctor who will assess for this and other eye problems.

You may end up getting corrective glasses or contact lenses to help with astigmatism.
