‘My mum and music are my girlfriends!’ – Nigerian singer CKay


Nigerian singer CKay has shared some of his personal convictions as to why he is a big name in the Afrobeats music scene, crediting hard work.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Nairobi News, the ‘Emiliana’ crooner opened up about how in as much as people assume he has been lucky in his successful stint in music, he is just another normal human being who puts a lot of hustle in his bustle. 

“I think I worked hard and God blessed my effort, which is different from luck. I made sacrifices, I worked hard and God blessed it,” said CKay.

CKay is in the country for today’s Blankets and Wine concert at Kasarani.

About his love life, the musician was rather hesitant to disclose whether he is romantically involved with anyone and instead gave vague answers to the question on dating, saying;

“I am not single. My mum and music are my girlfriends. I have a lot of girlfriends.”

The singer gave the reason behind his choice of stage name, saying that ‘CKay’ is simply a short form of his real name.

“I didn’t choose the name, it chose me. It’s the short form of my first name which is Chukwuka which means ‘God is Great’.”

Seeing into the future, the Nigerian singer said he would like his legacy to be that he made an impact on the African music scene. 

“My legacy should be my achievements, discoveries, innovations, and how I made African music better,” he said.

CKay, real name Chukwuka Ekweani is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and record producer. His international hit single “Love Nwantiti”, also known as “Love Nwantiti (Ah Ah Ahh)”, was released in 2019, and in March 2022, the song debuted at number one, following the launch of the Billboard Afrobeats chart.

In May 2022, it became the first African song in history to surpass one billion streams on Spotify.

Just over a week ago, CKay, made musical history as the first-ever African artist to feature in the top 100 Billboard Artist year-end chart, a milestone that underpins Afrobeats’ meteoric rise and shakeup of the global music scene.
