Nairobi County Assembly dismisses claims of a brawl between MCAs
The Nairobi County Assembly has termed assault allegations by Kayole South MCA Elizabeth Manyala as rumors.
Viwandani Ward MCA Samwel Nyangwara, who is also a member of the Speaker’s panel, said the County Assembly can only deal with the issue once it is brought to the floor of the house.
“Until a member of the County Assembly brings a motion to be discussed in the assembly we will just term it as rumors since no official complaint has been raised by any member,”said Nyangwara.
Kayole South MCA Elizabeth Akinyi Manyala was last week hospitalised at Nairobi Hospital after she was allegedly assaulted by majority leader Elias Otieno. She is currently at the High Dependancy Unit (HDU).
The majority leader has since denied the allegations.
Mr Nyangwara said the chamber is aware that Ms Manyala is admitted at a hospital, but can not confirm the cause of her hospitalisation.
He also denied claims that MCAs have been silent on the alleged assault for fear of being removed from committees or denied trips abroad by the majority leader.
Mr Nyangwara observed that since the alleged incident happened in the premise of the County Assembly, there are some privileges that the members enjoy and only the Committee of Power and Privileges can recommend on the disciplinary action.
“I can assure you if this incidence is true, once it comes in the assembly, it will be dealt with appropriately. However we have a problem with the Power and Privileges Committee, it’s toothless,”said Mr Nyangwara.
