Nairobi County to build market on disputed South B land
Nairobi County government plans to construct a modern market in South B, a Nairobi suburb.
The market, Nairobi News understands will be constructed in Nairobi South ward.
The market could be constructed on a piece of land that has been contested between the county government and a private developer. The land is reportedly valued at Sh200 million.
The market in South B is among ten modern markers planned for construction in the 2023/2024 financial year.
Construction of one of the ten markets has commenced in Mutuini Dagoretti South sub-county at the cost of Sh244 million.
The decision to construct the market in South B is a big win for the traders who have been risking their lives selling their wares alongside roads.
The land in South B has been contested between the residents and Kiambu Town MP Machua Waithaka.
The lawmaker claims to own the land with a genuine title deed.
However, Nairobi South Member of County Assembly Ms Waithera Chege says the land was grabbed and the documents forged.
This past week, the Commercial Court ruled it does not have jurisdiction to hear a case filed by the lawmaker on the said land owing to the reported cost of the land.
As the ownership battles rage on, area residents recently protested while asking Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to intervene and ensure the land is not grabbed. The led to a visit to the scene by county officials who however failed to resolve the matter.
Ms Chege has maintained she will fight to ensure South B residents gain from the public land at the expense of a private developer.
