Nairobi doctors hold street protest over unpaid salaries – PHOTOS
Nairobi doctors on Wednesday held a street protest to demand for their unpaid salaries and promotions.
The nearly 250 doctors, who are members of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union, held the demonstration from Afya House to City Hall.
They were protesting over delayed salaries and promotions and the county government’s alleged failure to remit statutory deductions such as NHIF and NSSF fees in the last eight months.
The also claimed the county had not provided car and mortgage allowances and failed to give give them official appointment letters.
The protesting doctor meet Governor Evans Kidero at City Hall who said the unpaid salaries will be paid in a “few days.”
“I don’t understand why doctors have not been paid, whoever is responsible for the delay will go home,” said Governor Kidero.
“I know you have been wronged, please go back to work.”
On Monday, Nairobi County Secretary Robert Ayisi had ordered the doctors to resume work, saying the strike is illegal.
Mr Ayisi cited a September 16 order by the Employment and Labour Relations Court that nullified the industrial action until September 29.
