Nairobi leads in number of voters seeking transfer

By FAITH NYAMAI January 25th, 2017 1 min read

The ongoing voter registration in Nairobi has been characterized by massive voter transfers from neighbouring constituencies, a move thought to be politically influenced.

In a day, registration centre’s in the city are receiving an average of 200 transfers with majority coming from neighbouring constituencies.

A spot check on Tuesday in various centre’s found out that most of the people who want to transfer have been influenced by politicians to ensure that they vote them in during the August elections.

At Kibra constituency office, the centre is recording between 200 and 300 transfers daily.

Dagoretti North is leading with more vote transfers from neighbouring constituencies with the number ranging between 300 and 500 a day.

Other areas with mass transfer of voters are Mathare and Embakasi constituencies.

PREFERRED ASPIRANT

According to Mr Joseph Lilinda Munala, a resident of Kibra, he transferred his vote from his polling station to a different one to vote for his preferred aspirant.

“My candidate is vying for a seat at constituency different from the one I voted in 2013 and therefore I have to transfer to ensure that I vote him in,” said Mr Munala.

Ms Florence Ongare, a Kibra community leader, said several other people seeking transfers relocated from their previous residences to Kibra.

Mr John Kimani, a resident of Dagoretti North, said politicians are encouraging their supporters to transfer to ensure that they are voted in or to ensure their rivals lose.

The number of people flocking Huduma Centres for IDs has also gone up.
