Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna hits out at government over wastage
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has expressed concerns over the state of the economy and the government’s spending habits, calling for immediate action to alleviate the suffering of the Kenyan people.
Sifuna strongly criticized the government’s excessive expenditures and the rising tide of corruption, asserting that it was time to prioritize the welfare of the citizens over lavish perks.
“The alternative to save the economy is the government must cut its spending,” Senator Sifuna declared.
“You cannot tell us that you’re traveling every day while the people of Kenya are suffering. We need to cut wasteful spending in the government and tackle the corruption that is plaguing our nation. A thief remains a thief; they can never change.”
The youthful Senator highlighted a recent incident involving a Cabinet Secretary who allegedly allocated a staggering 90 million Kenyan shillings for the purchase of a house in Nairobi.
Expressing disbelief, the Senator questioned the priorities of a government that allowed such expenditures while the people struggled to make ends meet.
“I do not believe that what this government is doing is right,” Sifuna stated firmly. “The people are telling us that it is not okay to burden them with additional taxation. If this finance bill passes, we will experience a rise in the cost of living from early next month. Our position is clear and has the support of a coalition; it should provide Kenyans with some relief,”
Highlighting the dire situation faced by ordinary citizens, Sifuna emphasized the need for a government that prioritizes the welfare of its people. He expressed his concern for those suffering from hunger, the soaring prices of basic commodities, and the widespread unemployment that has plagued the nation.
“We need to encourage an economy that can provide for its people,” Sifuna asserted. “You can’t talk about luxury houses while people go to bed hungry. The price of Unga (maize flour) has skyrocketed, and unemployment rates are soaring. Any government that suggests that additional taxation is the solution to people’s struggles is deceiving us.”
However the senator called upon members of the opposition coalition to stand united in solidarity with the citizens. He urged them to listen to the grievances of the people and act accordingly, emphasizing the importance of aligning actions with the needs expressed by the public.
“I encourage members of the opposition coalition to speak out for the people,” Sifuna appealed. “As we approach the final vote on Tuesday, it is crucial that we address the concerns of those we represent. It doesn’t make sense to make decisions in the parliament that contradict what we are being told on the ground.”
