Nairobi Speaker summons Kidero over impeachment motion

Nairobi County Speaker Alex ole Magelo has asked Governor Evans Kidero to appear before the assembly next Tuesday to defend himself against allegations in a motion seeking his removal from office.

In a letter, the Speaker asked Dr Kidero to show up in the assembly at 2.30 pm on October 11.

“You are further advised that you are entitled to … legal representation,” stated the letter.

The motion to impeach the governor is sponsored by Viwandani MCA Samuel Nyang’wara and was tabled on Tuesday amid chaos.

It has eight allegations against Dr Kidero.

POOR LEADERSHIP

Mr Nyang’wara accuses him of misappropriation of county funds, gross misconduct and poor leadership.

The governor is expected to defend himself against claims of soaring county debt, which rose from Sh12 billion when he took office to the current Sh42 billion.

“Some of the debts were not disclosed in the debt management strategy paper,” the motion paper states.

Mr Nyang’wara claims failure to disclose the debts amounts to gross misconduct as it is against the Constitution and the Public Finance Management Act.

The MCA has also accused the governor of flouting procurement laws when he contracted JamboPay to electronically collect revenue on behalf of the county.

Dr Kidero will also explain to the assembly why he diverted to other uses funds meant for free maternity.
