Nasa disowns letter on Sh300m compensation for chaos victims
Nasa chief executive Norman Magaya has disowned a letter that claimed the coalition will compensate victims of recent chaos from proceeds of its fundraiser.
The opposition coalition held a fundraiser on Friday at Laico Regency Hotel with Raila Odinga as the chief guest. The objective was to raise funds to meet funeral expenses for their supporters who died in election related chaos.
Soon after, a letter bearing Mr Magaya’s name started circulating online urging victims chaos to register with local Nasa agents, indicating the amount of compensation they expect.
The letter stated that the coalition had raised sh300 million which will be distributed to all victims.
During the fundraiser, Mr Odinga said he was sad that some of his supporters died in what was supposed to be a happy occasion of welcoming him back home.
The ‘fake letter’ had instructed victims to provide their names, details of the loss incurred, amount of compensation expected and an M-Pesa registered telephone number.
The M-Pesa detail raised eyebrows after Nasa had urged it supporters to boycott the services of Safaricom.
It urged victims to keep their compensation expectations moderate so that the money could reach many. This made some online users to question the letter’s authenticity before Magaya disowned it.
