Netflix warns fans of Bird Box over blindfold challenge

By AGEWA MAGUT January 3rd, 2019 2 min read

Netflix has advised fans of its new movie ‘Bird Box’ to avoid injuring themselves while trying to imitate blindfold scenes from the film.

The movie’s plot describes a time when creatures lurking about drive people to committing suicide if they look at them, forcing survivors to move about and operate while blindfolded.

“Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes,” the official film streaming website posted on their Twitter handle on Wednesday morning.

45 MILLION

Netflix said the movie was streamed by 45 million subscribers in its first week of release last week.

The film follows the lives of Mallorie, played by Sandra Bullock, and Boy and Girl, her unnamed children as they try to find safety in the chaos while blindfolded. Fans of the thriller have taken up the challenge by trying to reenact some of the film’s iconic scenes- while wearing blindfolds and recording them.

Some of the recorded attempts of the challenge have shown people putting themselves and even their children in danger while walking into walls and even on streets, all the while wearing blindfolds, just as the characters in the film were forced to do in order to survive.

As much as Netflix has expressed concern over the safety of their subscribers, they did not discourage the challenge. The post elicited mixed reactions from tweeps.

BLINDFOLDED

“You know people doing this can’t see this tweet…because they are blindfolded,” replied Hunter Boggs @thehunterboggs to the tweet by the streaming site.

“Bruh Netflix tryna get me to take my blindfold off? Foh I see you plotting !!!”chimed in JOSHUA cURRY@0hMyyJosh.

Nathan Needs More Coffee@Its_N8_Again tweted that, “It’s not a challenge. It’s natural selection in action. Let nature do its work.”

“Too late! Our whole family is wearing blindfolds and hosting a competitive knife toss!” Sean Masterson @SeanMastersons joined in the fun.
