New fees policy infuriates Daystar University students

Staff members and lecturers  at Daystar University Athi River campus were held hostage by demonstrating students  on Friday night for more than seven hours.

The students were protesting against a new policy introduced by the university’s administration requiring a student to clear school fees all tuition fees a semester ahead.

They also said the institution’s vice chancellor has threatened to retrench some staff members and teaching staff.

One of the student whom Nairobi News talked to said they had demanded that  the vice chancellor Dr. Timothy Wachira address them in a  student baraza which they had organized but he refused to show up.

“ The chancellor thinks he can do trample on our rights, so we decided to force him  address us even if it means that staff members and lecturers will sleep in the cold tonight” he said.

The demonstration started at around 3.00pm after classes when the students marched peacefully to the main gate and locked it using their own padlocks  barring anyone from leaving the  university’s compound.

It took the intervention of the deputy vice chancellor to convince the students that the matter was going to be addressed at which point they opened the gates.
