Hawking prohibited at Madaraka Day venue

Hawkers will not be allowed into Nyayo National Stadium during the Madaraka Day celebration on Monday.

Nairobi Regional County Commissioner Njoroge Ndirangu said the hawkers will only be allowed to sell their wares outside the stadium gates before and after the event.

“Because of security reasons, hawkers will not be allowed to sell their wares inside the venue,” he said.

Mr Ndirangu spoke in Nairobi during a meeting of the National Celebrations committee where he stated that security forces will be beefed up within the city and around the estates.

He stated that enough forces will be deployed on Monday especially around the stadium to frisk people in order to ensure the celebrations goes on smoothly.

The Celebration Committee Chairman Mr Mohamed Barre called on Kenyans to show up in large numbers to celebrate the country’s history.

“It is unfortunate that some of us operate shops during such important events, let us be patriotic and attend national celebrations because they are meant for us,” Mr Barre said.

Mr Ndirangu added that Nairobi County usually received a fair number of celebrants but urged city residents to make this year’s celebration the biggest.

“In Nairobi we have never had a problem with numbers but we want record crowds this year,” he said.

He said the Country owed it to those who sacrificed and fought for independence, the appreciation of marking a historic date.
