No. This supermarket is not selling Whiskey for Sh400K
A picture doing rounds on social media shows what looks like a 750ml bottle of whiskey placed on a shelf at a Nakumatt supermarket, going for a staggering Sh452,100.
The picture is popular among Kenyans purely because of the mind-boggling price tag.
Many Kenyans are yet to wrap their minds around it.
“Will I buy a plot (piece of land) or a bottle of whiskey?” posed Bob Mugendi on Facebook, while Monica Akinyi said “that is the price of a (Toyota) Vitz”.
The Nairobi News reached out to Alfred Ng’ang’a, Nakumatt’s publicist and he confirmed that indeed Nakumatt is selling a bottle of whiskey for Sh452,100 –but in Tanzania!
For starters, one Kenyan shilling buys you around 20 tanzanian shillings.
Therefore, the price of the whiskey in Kenyan currency is Sh22,605.
Also in Tanzania, a 750ml bottle of Viceroy, a popular brandy among Kenyans is selling for TSh20,200 which is just KSh1,010, while that of Johnny Walker Red Label is going for Tsh37,700 or just Ksh1,885.
