No power struggles over Mugenda’s tenure, says KU senate

The Kenyatta University Senate has denied claims surrounding Vice Chancellor Prof Olive Mugenda’s tenure at the institution amid growing speculation of a simmering power struggle.

In a paid up advertisement in the dailies on Monday, the senate sought to address claims on Prof Mugenda’s tenure, including allegations that she has refused to proceed on terminal leave pending appointment of the next Vice Chancellor.

In a half page press statement, the senate also dismissed allegations on extension of Prof Mugenda’s tenure by three years as untrue.

The senate added that Prof Mugenda is within her term limit and will be supported as she continues with her responsibilities.

“The University Council is fully in charge and aware of the process of appointment of the Vice Chancellor and should be left to do so as per the university charter and statues,” read the statement in part.

The senate further urged Prof Mugenda to remain focused on her responsibilities and duties and not to be derailed from steering ongoing projects.

“The university senate as a major stakeholder in the university governance would like the external and internal parties to desist from writing untruths, rumours and fabricated accusations against the VC,” read the statement.

Prof Mugenda was first appointed as KU Vice Chancellor in April 2006. She was reappointed in March 2011 after re-applying.

Her current term is set to end in March 2016.
