Iconic mobile phone brand Nokia back in Kenya with new devices

Iconic mobile phone brand Nokia has made its return into the Kenyan market with three smartphones and the classic 3310.

Alongside the 3310, HMD Global, the Finnish Company that is licensed to make the Nokia phones, also unveiled Nokia 6, Nokia 5, and Nokia 3 in Nairobi on Thursday evening at the National Museum of Kenya.

Kenya became the third country in Africa that Nokia has launched its devices, having already done so in South Africa and Nigeria.

Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 will retail locally at Sh14,999, Sh19,999 and Sh24,999 respectively and will be available through Safaricom and selected retailers.

“We are delighted to bring the Nokia 3310 phone to our consumers in Kenya. Nokia has been one of the most iconic and recognisable phone brands in our country for decades,” said Justin Maier, vice president Sub-Saharan Africa, HMD Global.

RELAUNCHED

“HMD has received an incredible reception from our partners so far; it seems everyone shares our excitement for this next chapter,” he was quick to add.

The Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 will have 5 inch, 5.2 inch and 5.5 inch screens respectively.

All come with an 8 megapixel front camera with the back cameras ranging from 8 megapixel to 16 megapixel and an Aluminum frame to keep in line with the ‘hardiness’ of the devices.

The classic 3310 is being relaunched with a modern twist on design though Nokia has been careful to blend the old with the new, adding a 2PX front camera. It also boasts an incredible 22-hour talk-time and a month long standby.

The feature phone is available in four distinctive colours – warm red and yellow – both with a gloss finish, and dark blue and grey both with a matte finish and will retail at Sh5,200.

HANDSETS

The Nokia 6 is the biggest of all three of these Nokia-branded handsets, featuring a 5.5-inch full HD screen 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, all powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 430 processor.

The forward-facing camera has 8-megapixel is getting upgraded with a wide-angle lens and auto-focus, and the regular camera remains the same as the Chinese variant: 16-megapixel with dual tone flash.

Nokia 5 is slightly smaller than the Nokia 6 with a 5.2-inch display, and it is powered by 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 430 processor.

HMD partnered with Nokia, Google and Foxconn in the manufacture of the devices that are powered by Android.

In 2015, the Finnish company Nokia stated that it would start licensing mobile phone handsets under its brand name.
