Nubians to wait longer for title deeds

The Nubian community was not issued with a communal title deed last week after Governor Evans Kidero advised President Uhuru Kenyatta against it.

On Saturday last week preparations for the ceremony were in high gear. A dais had even been erected on the area DC’s compound in readiness for the function but the President was nowhere to be seen leaving members of the community baffled.

“With a lot of humility, I implored on the President to rethink the decision to issue the land title because we feel that the whole plan was hurriedly conceived,” he told NairobiNews on Thursday.

He convinced the President that giving the Nubians 288 acres of land would isolate other communities who, like them, know Kibera as their only home.

“It is true that Nubians belong there but issuing them with a communal title deed will alienate other communities who also deserve titles in their own right. We felt that this would not be good for cohesion,” the governor said.

Kidero said that he discussed the matter with Uhuru at State House last Saturday, before he was supposed to issue the title at Kibera.

“It is ok to give titles to these people but wider consultations need to be done to factor in other communities in the programme. You rush the matter and it backfires, I made this clear to the President,” said the governor.
