Mark this date on your calendar. Barring a technicality, Kenya’s Michael Olunga will come face to face with Lionel Messi on September 23.

This is the designated match day of the fixture between his new club Girona and Spanish giants Barcelona at the Estadi Montilivi in the Spanish La Liga.

The Kenyan international sealed the move the top flight Spanish club on the deadline day of the transfer window on Friday night.

The 23-year-old has signed a year-long temporary deal with the newly promoted Spanish outfit with permission from his parent Chinese club Zhicheng FC.

After almost a week of media speculation, the transfer was announced at 9pm on Friday, fours hours before the lapse of the Spanish transfer window.

TASTY FIXTURES

“(It’s) a new leaflet to write political history,” said the player, after this transfer was confirmed.

“Thanks be to God for making me realise this moment in my career. I trusted in you and you have once again made me see your goodness. All glory is to you.”

If all goes well, Olunga, who received his football education in Kenya at Thika United, Tusker and Gor Mahia, could make his debut against Athletic Bilbao on September 10 at the latter’s San Mames Stadium.

And it could get better. Another tasty clash against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid is lined up for October 29.

Olunga arrives at a time when Girona are still enjoying their first ever promotion to the Spanish La Liga. The club started life in the Spanish top division on a bright note with a win and a draw to stay in sixth place after two matches.
