One student still missing from Garissa attack
One student is still missing following the Garissa University College terror attack on April 02.
The college’s student leader Collins Waliaula, who is among those who have joined Moi University’s Main Campus in Eldoret, said the parents of Ms Risper Mutinda from Kitui County have been looking for her since the attack.
“I met them at Chiromo last month where they did DNA tests. Their finger prints were also taken but did not match any body,” said Mr Waliaula.
“They told me they had gone back to the college and even searched nearby forests to no avail. They fear their daughter may have been killed and eaten by hyenas, which roam the area freely,” he added.
There has been no information on the whereabouts of Ms Mutinda, a second-year business student.
The attack, the worst in the recent past in Kenya, left 148 people dead, among them 142 students.
ORIENTATION
This came as 489 of those who survived the attack were admitted to the Main Campus. The number is expected to increase to about 500.
On Thursday, student leaders from both the closed down college and the Main Campus met the university management, but details of the meeting were not immediately released.
The survivors started reporting to the university on Wednesday, and were received by the deputy vice-chancellor in charge of student affairs, Prof Nathan Ogechi.
Efforts to get a comment from the management of Garissa University College failed to bear fruit.
Moi University Students Organisation chairman Geoffrey Omondi told the Daily Nation on phone that orientation for the students started on Thursday and would end on Monday, after which lectures will begin. The students will also be helped to get over the trauma.
Prof Ogechi said 650 students are expected to join the Main Campus as the future of the Garissa-based college hangs in the balance.
