Orange, Strathmore battle for league title

By BRIAN YONGA December 6th, 2014 2 min read

Defending Champions Telkom Orange will take on Strathmore Scorpions on Sunday in the final of the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Women’s Premier League after both teams won their respective semi finals on Saturday.

Orange beat Sliders 4-0 in the first semi final match while Strathmore were 3-0 winners over USIU Spartans in the second semi.

The two teams finished in the top two positions last season and also represented the country in the Africa Club Championship last week in Bulawayo Zimbabwe.

The final match, which kicks off at 10:30 am at City Park Stadium, promises to be a cracker with the two teams in great form.

Scorpions shrugged off the disappointment of Bulawayo to ease past a poor USIUS side that lacked a cutting edge.

League top scorer Gilly Okumu grabbed a brace while Yvonne Karanja added a third to seal their team’s slot in the final.

FIERCE BATTLE

“The girls were determined to put the disappointment of Bulawayo behind them and they did it in style. We now want to finish the season by winning the title,” Strathmore coach Meshack Senge said.

Gilly Okumu, who now has 12 goals warned, Orange to expect a fierce battle noting that her team was hungry to lift their maiden title.

“We will give them a fight of their lives. We want the title as much as they do so it will be a tough match,” Okumu said.

Telkom Orange booked their place in today’s final after thrashing poor Sliders 4-0 in the first semi final.

Three first half goals from Lillian Aura, Margarate Rotich and Hellen Chemtai gave the defending champions a comfortable 3-0 lead at the break.

Jackline Jow added another in the second half as Orange  barely broke sweat in the encounter to set up a final clash with Strathmore who whipped USIU 3-0.

GOOD PERFORMANCE

The two teams will battle for the honours on Sunday at more beat ill clash at City

Orange coach Jos Openda praised his charges for their emphatic team noting they were still in good form following their continental triumph last week. The tactician called on his team to finish the season on a high by defending their crown.

“It was a good performance despite a few signs of fatigue. We were able to display a match winning performance and we are now a win away from another title,” Openda told Nairobi News.

Orange will be eyeing a record 17th national crown to add to their seventh continental crown which they lifted last week after thumping Bulawayo Athletics Club 7-0 in the final.

In the Men’s Premier League, Nairobi Simba beat Wazalendo 3-2 in the third place play off in an earlier match at the same venue.

Kenya Police will take on Butali Suagr Warriors in the men’s final at 1:30 pm on Sunday as the curtains come down on the 2014 league season.
