Passaris stirs Twitter storm with online funds drive that rewards donors
Nairobi Woman Representative candidate Esther Passaris on Monday launched her online funds drive.
Passaris said her new strategy to fundraise online will ensure people “support good leadership.”
But it is the promise to award 21 lucky donors with a motorbike and bicycles that got many people talking. Some also criticized her choice of slogan that “the more you donate, the higher the chances of winning.”
Users said she had turned the funds drive into a lottery, instead of being an initiative for soliciting funds to support a leader who voters wants to see in office.
Passaris however defended the “donate and win” approach, saying it will enable her appreciate some of her donors.
When tasked to ensure she does not become self-centered when elected after fundraising from common mwananchi, Passaris responded, “I hear you. I do not want to be called Muheshimiwa or Honourable until I have served and earned the title. One must feel the change.”

Nothing can be taken for granted. Everyday costs approx 200 k to get around, touch lives, advertise and hand out campaign materials.

“You shall know them by their fruits.” What should we expect of a leader who entices with prizes? Bad idea.

That’s a good idea of fund raising. With or without a prize we will chip in
