Passengers robbed by armed gangsters in Umoja matatu


Passengers on a commuter matatu in Nairobi were on Tuesday morning ambushed and robbed off all their belongings by armed gangsters.

The incident took place in a CBD-bound matatu belonging to Umoinner Sacco at Peacock stage around 7am.

According to the victims, several youths boarded the matatu at the said stage while their accomplices waited for them on motorcycles.

Bururburu DCI Jeremiah Ikiao told Nairobi News that one person was shot by the thugs as they fled.

“An Uber driver was shot on the thigh by the thugs who shot in the air as they escaped. He was taken to a nearby hospital and he is out of danger,” Ikiao said on phone.

SHOT DEAD

In several separate incidents reported on Monday, four suspected thugs were gunned down within Nairobi.

One suspect was shot dead after alarm was raised by pedestrians who saw them accosting a man and trying to rob him.

He was gunned down within Nigeria area in Mathare at around 8pm as his two accomplices escaped.

“The three had robbed a man of his wallet that had Sh2,000 and his ID,” Ikiao said.

According to the police, the man was fortunate because there were officers on patrol who shot down one of the suspects and recovered a gun from him.

FOILED ROBBERY

Another suspected thug was shot dead in Buruburu after he was caught robbing a woman.

The suspect was shot at around 11.40pm, after officers on patrol spotted a group of men robbing a woman.

“When they were challenged, they started shooting and one suspect was fatally wounded,” the police boss said.

In Industrial Area, two other suspects were felled after a woman raised alarm on Monday night as a group of men tried to gang rape her.

Police said that they followed the group of men robbing pedestrians and later found them trying to gang rape the woman.

Two of them were fatally wounded and police recovered two knives and a toy pistol.
