Pastor Dorcas Gachagua: When I want a favour, I call my husband ‘Riggy G’

The wife of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Pastor Dorcas Gachagua, has revealed that her husband nowadays prefers being called Riggy G.

Speaking during the ‘Sikika Youth Fest’ at Mount Kenya University on Friday, the mother of two also said when she wants something from her husband, she addresses him as ‘Riggy G’.

“The Deputy President likes it when you call him Riggy G. He dances a lot when he hears that name. It makes him feel young. Whenever I want a favour, I call him Riggy G,” Pastor Gachagua said.

The nickname was coined by Ivy Chelimo, a law student at Catholic University, while expressing her views on the deputy presidential debate in July 2022, ahead of the General Election.

The nickname quickly caught on and was soon embraced by Mr Gachagua himself. In October, 2022 a month after his inauguration, the Deputy President met Ms Chelimo and offered her a state job.

“The creative economy is a result of empowered youth. It will be allowed to thrive and be given all the support in our administration. I met Ivy Chelimo, the ‘Riggy G’ brand initiator, who paid me a courtesy call in my office,” the DP said on October 17, 2022 in Kajiado County during the World Food Day.

Ms Chelimo, who had accompanied the DP to the the World Food Day celebrations, said she was excited by the job offer.

“Thank you Mr Deputy, you offered me a job this morning, and he is very passionate about the youth taking up places in this government,” she said, while lauding the DP for challenging the youth to take over leadership.

Initially, the Deputy President admitted he was awestruck by the nickname.

“Riggy G is melodious. I amazed that our creative young people have given me a nickname… they have looked at my two names Rigathi Gachagua, looked for something sounding easier, more melodious and called me Riggy G, and I don’t think its a bad name,” the DP said on September 24, 2022 during the finals of the 94th Kenya Music Festival at Kisumu Girls High School, Kisumu County.

Mr Gachagua would later direct his two sons to find and bring Ms Chelimo to him for a reward.

On her part, Ms Chelimo had said that she was not expecting Riggy G’s name to grow to the extent being used by the Deputy President.
