Pickpocket who stole patient’s phone at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital pleads guilty

A pickpocket who was arrested while exiting Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Nairobi after stealing a mobile phone from a patient has pleaded guilty to charges of theft and handling stolen goods.

Anthony Mutua Mutunga was charged on Friday at the Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi. He admitted that he stole Susan Wanjiku’s phone worth Sh11, 999 on February 8, 2023.

Mr Mutunga arrested by at the hospital’s gate by the security guards after he was captured on CCTV stealing the phone from Ms Wanjiku who was seeking treatment at the facility.

The accused was also charged with stealing another mobile phone from a staffer at the hospital. Mr Mutunga admitted stealing the phone from Matilda Syombua Muasya on February 1, 2023. In this incident too, the suspect was captured on CCTV stealing the phone from Ms Muasya’s dust coat’s pocket.

He was also charged with handling stolen property after he was found with Ms Wanjiku’s phone. He pleaded guilty to the charge before Principal Magistrate Eric Mutunga.

The accused was remanded in custody until February 14, 2023 when the prosecution will lay out its case against him before he is sentenced.
