Police arrest four Thika road blasts suspects
Police have arrested four suspects over the twin blast that ripped buses on Thika Superhighway, on Sunday
Nairobi County police commander Benson Kibui said the four suspects have been “positively identified” and are in police custody waiting to appear before court .
Two people were killed and more than 50 injured in the near-simultaneous explosions.
The blasts targeted buses on the Thika Superhighway and were about seven minutes apart.
The first explosion went off on a 52-seater bus named Jeean at the Homeland bus stop opposite Garden City, outside Homeland Inn near Kenya Breweries at around 5.05pm.
The second explosion was in a Mwi-sacco bus at the Kasarani underpass at around 5.29pm.
Mr Kibue said on Wednesday that the suspects would be charged in court soon, but disclosed neither the nature of offences facing them, their identities nor where they were being held.
He said the four would be in custody, helping police with leads on the attacks which have been blamed on Al-Shabaab.
“They have been positively identified in connection with the two blasts. They will appear in court any time from now,” Mr Kibue said.
Investigators have been following leads on telephone signals traced to Mombasa on a SIM card recovered from the blast scene on Sunday.
The detectives have also analysed samples of debris gathered at the scene to establish the nature of explosives used.
Matatu strike
It is suspected that the bombs were triggered using a remote control.
Some witnesses who recorded statements with the police described the identities of the two suspects who alighted from the ill-fated Mwi Sacco Bus moments before it left the CBD.
Mr Kibue criticised matatu operators for their strike in Githurai on Wedneday in protest against the prosecution of five of their colleagues over the Sunday incident.
Two drivers and three conductors of the ill-fated buses have been charged with failing to prevent the killing, and were slapped with Sh15 million bond each to secure their freedom pending trial that begins on July 17.
On Monday the government urged the Judiciary to be tough on terror-linked offenders after the Sunday attacks that came hot on the heels of similar ones on a bus park and a recreation centre in Mombasa.
