Police boss who disarmed drunk colleague rewarded

A senior police officer was honoured on Thursday for disarming a colleague who was threatening to shoot at the public near a bar.

On Monday morning, Chief Inspector Peninnah Kamicha’s mobile phone rang as she sat in the Nakuru police chief’s office for a security meeting.

“Madam, there is an armed regular police officer near Signature Club who seems drunk and is threatening to shoot at the public,” said the caller, one of her juniors.

After the call, Ms Kamicha advised the officer to work with others on the ground to disarm Constable Adikan Noor.

But they feared Mr Noor could shoot at them. They joined the public in fleeing for their lives.

Ms Kamicha, 33, on Thursday recounted the events at Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua’s office, where she was awarded an undisclosed amount of money for her courage and efforts in saving lives.

Ms Kamicha said she was given a lift by another officer and arrived at the spot in less than five minutes, only to discover that the armed officer had left for Bondeni on a boda boda.

Shaken wananchi informed her that other officers had pursued the man on motorbikes.

“I hastily followed them and thought Noor would go to the Bondeni Police Station, but he went to Bondeni slums, still threatening to shoot indiscriminately,” said Ms Kamicha

The other officers and slum dwellers fled, but she pursued Mr Noor on her own. Ms Kamicha said she hid in a kiosk and locked the door after Mr Noor threatened to shoot her.

“Noor then called me, and I asked him to calm down so that we could talk,” said Ms Kamicha.

But he threatened to shoot her if she came out.

“When he started leaving, I stepped out of the kiosk, followed Noor and held him from behind,” she said.

She fought the officer and removed the magazine from the gun. She discovered that the officer had cocked the gun and there was one bullet in the chamber.

“I tried to seize the gun so that I could shoot in the air but both of us fell,” she said. “When we rose, the gun was in my hands.”

Mr Mbugua said: “The armed officer would have killed many people had it not been for Ms Kamicha’s courage.”
