Police kill gangsters caught on camera in robbery attempt

The four gangsters who were caught in a surveillance video that has gone viral unsuccessfully trying to carjack an armoured BMW were gunned down in Nairobi last Thursday.

The four were felled at 1 pm at Manyanja Road, near Umoja, by undercover officers who had been trailing them after the botched robbery in Parklands that morning.

POINTING GUNS

In the 8 am incident outside a gate in Parklands, two gangsters were caught by CCTV cameras trying to force open the doors of a vehicle belonging to an Asian businessman, while pointing guns at the driver.

One gangster later attempted to break the car window screen, which failed.

The businessman then bravely sped off leaving the thugs firing gunshots.

They then hopped onto two boda bodas that had been whirling around all along.

Special Crime Prevention Unit officers backed by colleagues from the Flying Squad then mounted an operation to track the gang.

Head of SCPU Noah Katumo said the trail led them to Eastlands where the gang planned to rob a Chinese businessman.

TWO PISTOLS

“The officers had information about them because they had been involved in other robberies in the past. They were well profiled. So when they were challenged, they shot at the officers who of course responded and that’s it,” he said.

Two pistols – a Ceska and a Glock – and 14 rounds of live ammunition were recovered from the fallen gangsters, Mr Katumo added.

One of the pistols is thought to have been taken from a police officer.

Police have increased patrols in the city to curb an upsurge of crime in the recent weeks.
