Police gun down three robbers in Westlands

Police on Monday gunned down three suspected thugs along the Brookside drive, in Westlands, bringing to five the number of suspects killed on the same day.

One of the suspects escaped with an AK47 rifle.

The four had tried to rob a businessman in Sarit Center at around 10:30 am when police officers who were on their trail accosted them.

“We have been looking for these people for a very long time. We have several CCTV footages handed over to us by businessmen in Westlands, Kileleshwa, Gigiri and parts of Langata showing the same gang robbing them,” Gigiri OCPD, Vitalis Otieno said.

According to Mr Otieno, police asked the gang to surrender at the Sarit, but instead they ran away, entered their car, a KBE 594Y and drove off.

“They entered the Brookside drive but police managed to approach them from both ends. One of them who was armed with an AK47 managed to escape as he shot at the officers. We managed to shoot these three,” Mr Otieno said.

From the suspects, police recovered a homemade gun, several mobile phones, handcuffs, a fake radio call, several identification cards and some unidentified liquids.

One of the suspects who was gunned down, according to the police boss, had been trailed by detectives  for more than four months.

“We have a CCTV footage taken during a robbery at Peponi Road. The man identified as Mutua Maingi was one of the robbers. In the footage, he was holding an AK47,” Mr Otieno said.

The suspect is said to be living in Rongai and has been involved in several robberies in Kileleshwa, Westlands and Runda.

Earlier at around 4am, police had shot dead two other suspects in Githurai 44 and recovered several items suspected to have been stolen from the public.

Police said the robbers were part of a gang that is notorious for attacking and robbing residents early in the morning.

Three other members of the gang escaped; one of them having sustained serious gunshot wounds in his thighs.
