Police investigate three deaths at Nairobi construction site
Police in Nairobi have launched a manhunt for a developer in whose house three masons have reportedly died in the last three months.
One of the deceased’s, namely Mr Julius Wekesa Wanyonyi, 36, was on June 13, 2023, busy at work when he fell from the third floor of the building leading to his death on the spot.
Ms Alice Nanjala, Wekesa’s wife said she is yet to view her husband’s bodt at a City Mortuary since he passed on.
“It was one of his friends who came and told me that my husband had died, the management of the building has never reached out to us,” Ms Nanjala said.
She said that on that fateful day she had gone to the hospital as she was not feeling well to seek treatment. When she came back she was then informed that her husband had died.
Ms Nanjala said her husband died on the first day he went to seek a job after missing a slot the previous day.
“I am still wondering whether he was dressed in protective gears as the norm should be, no one has told us anything substantial so far,” she said.
Mr Timothy Shituma who is the brother in law of the deceased said that he was the one who booked the body at the morgue.
Mr Shituma said that he was informed of the incident and he rushed to the scene where he confirmed that his brother in law was no more.
This is not the first time the building has been linked to the death of a person and in the last three months three people including Mr Wekesa have died.
In May 2023, another worker fell from the second floor of the building and died on the spot while in February another mason was electrocuted by power lines while he was on duty. He also died on the spot.
All these incidents have been happening despite the National Construction Authority (NCA) stopping any developments at the building.
At the entrance, which is a gate made of iron-sheet, NCA has put up a sign and said that the development is illegal.
