A police officer who is reported to have murdered a man while drinking inside a bar in an alleged love triangle has been found dead inside his house.

Titus Kirui has been battling murder charges since 2021 since he was arrested by his colleagues for allegedly shooting Mr Charles Maina Karugu in a suspected love triangle.

An officer privy to the matter told Nairobi News that the officer might have committed suicide as he has reportedly been disturbed since the incident occurred.

“His attitude changed and in most cases loved being alone. That started when he was arrested and linked to the murder of another man in 2021,” said our source.

On the day the murder took place, Mr Kirui is said to have had an altercation with Mr Karugu before he shot him dead on the spot.

Mr Karugu was rushed to Mama Lucy Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival and his body was taken to the City Mortuary.

An AK-47 was recovered from the suspected officer, as well as a spent cartridge, which were all kept as exhibits.

Court documents seen by Nairobi News reveal that the officer was released on bond in February 2022, with the court ruling the prosecution team had not demonstrated there exists any compelling reasons to deny the accused bail.

The magistrate ruled he be released on a Sh1,000,000 with a surety of a similar amount or Sh50,000 cash bail.

The court gave him strict bail terms including providing particulars of his actual places of abode and business to the Deputy Registrar in court and ensure he attends all court sessions when required to.

“The accused is warned not to interfere with any of the witnesses in this case in the form of covert or avert action whether by himself or through others. He should not approach, call or visit the potential witnesses in this case,” the Judge said.

Over the weekend, his neighbor identified as Mr Emmanuel Chesebe an officer attached to Kware Police Station and who resides within Villa Police Lines reported that he had not seen Mr Kirui for some days.

The officer went to check in his house and found that the door was closed from inside. He went ahead and peeped through the cracked window pane and he saw his neighbor hanging from the roof with a rope around his neck.

“Scene was visited by officers and sleuths attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Embakassi and it was documented. The body was moved to Chiromo Mortuary awaiting postmortem,” a police report seen by this reporter read.
