Police officer killed during confrontation with rioting touts
A police officer lost his life on the evening of Monday, November 27, 2023, during a confrontation with a riotous mob in Mwiki, Kasarani Sub-County, Nairobi.
Mr Mohamed Happi, one of the officers involved, was fatally shot as tensions escalated during the arrest of touts, causing chaos and traffic congestion along the Mwiki-Roysambu Road.
The officers, including Happi, had embarked on a mission to apprehend touts who were rioting and causing a traffic snarl-up. The targeted individuals were not dressed in uniform, and the situation took a violent turn during the arrests.
Nairobi County police boss, Mr Adamson Bungei, confirmed that investigations into the tragic incident were already underway. “Currently, a number of people are in custody following the incident. Investigations are also ongoing,” stated Mr Bungei.

The confrontation intensified as onlookers demanded the immediate release of the arrested individuals. Amidst the chaos, gunshots rang out, revealing that Happi had been shot dead and was lying on the ground. The fatal bullet pierced through his forehead and exited at the back.
Despite rushed efforts to save his life by transporting him to St Francis Hospital, the officer succumbed to his injuries.
Regrettably, all the touts apprehended were released in the aftermath of the tragic incident.
Nairobi News has learned that police officers and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are currently stationed at the main terminus of the matatu Sacco involved in the confrontation.
Two police land cruisers are parked at the terminus, indicating ongoing discussions between the officers and the Sacco’s management.
In a separate but equally unsettling development, police are investigating the discovery of a man’s body floating in Nairobi River within Ruai area, Nairobi County.
The body was found on the morning of Tuesday, November 28, 2023, by a woman who promptly alerted the authorities.
Preliminary findings suggest foul play, as police suspect the man was killed elsewhere and his body dumped into the river, concealed within a sack. The investigation into this second incident is ongoing as well.
