Police officer who endlessly fought motorists before meeting his death


A traffic police officer who died on Tuesday in Mombasa after the car whose driver he was trying to arrest run over him, is said to have had previous incidences of confrontations with motorists.

It has now emerged that the deceased police officer was known for his frequent tussles with motorists who resisted arrest.

Videos have since emerged showing the deceased, Julius Marwa, clashing with matatu operators in routes he was assigned to control traffic.

In one video, a motorist is seen holding a stick, accusing the officer of harassing operators while on duty.

In another video, Marwa storms into a matatu and tussles with the driver. He holds his shirt in an attempt to arrest him, but the driver resists.

“Usiwe umeamua hivyo… lakini nimekwambia kuna Mungu…” the driver tells him.

“Usinisumbue…Usinisumbue…” the police officer responds.

The struggle between the two goes on for a while.

According to a police report, Marwa met death while attempting to conduct a traffic check on a vehicle.

He was controlling traffic flow at Buxton junction, in Mombasa when he hailed a motorist for a traffic check but the motorist failed to stop.

The driver, who has since been identified as Osman Jama Abdi, was driving a silver Toyota Ractis. It is reported that he declined to turn off the engine to allow officer Marwa to conduct the search.

The traffic officer is then said to have opened the driver’s door, intending to turn off the ignition but Abdi grabbed his hand and immediately sped off.

According to the police, after driving for about 200 meters, the driver pushed out Mr Marwa and the rear right wheel of the vehicle ran over him.

The officer sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver was later arrested and is due to be arraigned in court.
