Police officers arrest their colleague over arson attack inside station


Police officers in Kakamega Police on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, arrested their colleague who allegedly set ablaze a vehicle within the station.

In a police report seen by Nairobi News, the suspect, identified as Evans Kamau, allegedly set ablaze the motor vehicle, which belongs to Ms Gladys Kimanzi of registration number KBQ 915W.

It is worth noting that the two officers share a house in the police lines block 7, door C at the Kakamega Station.

“Ms Gladys Kimanzi reported that she had a misunderstanding with her immediate neighbor whom she shares a house with in block 7 door C within Kakamega Police line and he walked out with some of his belongings,” the report read in part.

The officer could resurface in the wee hours of today, Tuesday, August 1, 2023, and allegedly set the complainant’s motor vehicle ablaze.

According to the police report in our possession, the suspect used a mattress and a matchstick.

“Police officers within the line managed to put out the fire but the bonnet and front part of the said vehicle was extensively consumed,” the report further read, adding that the scene was processed and documented by Crime Scene Investigators (CSI).

The report further revealed that the officers recovered two matchboxes in his possession and kept them as an exhibit.

Mr Kamau is accused of committing the crime while drunk and will be arraigned in court and face arson-related charges.

Cases of police officers breaking the law have been on the rise in the recent past.

On July 27, 2023, officials attached to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) took into custody a police boss on allegations of soliciting a Sh10,000 bribe to remove information recorded in the digital Occurrence Book (OB).

Nairobi News has established that the arrested individual, Ms Susan Wambui Muiruri, was apprehended for leading an assault on a man who had attempted to secure the release of his girlfriend, who had been detained at the police station.
