Police officers suspected of taking bribes charged in court


Two police officers attached to the traffic department of Kajiado County have been charged with being in possession of money suspected to been received from motorists as bribes.

Police Constable Margaret Mwende Mbulu and Police Constable Davis Mugo from whom Sh10,300 and Sh6,250 were recovered respectively, were arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court at the Milimani Law Courts on Tuesday.

Meanwhile a driver of private motor vehicle was accused of giving a Sh100 bribe to one of the two police officers.

All the three accused persons denied the separate corruption charges before anti-graft court senior principal magistrate Felix Kombo.

CASH BAIL

The officers denied the charge of dealing with suspect property contrary to the anti-corruption and economic crimes Act.

Defence lawyer Cliff Ombeta applied to have all the three accused admitted to bail saying they are not a flight risk.

They police officers and the driver were arrested on November 22, 2016 along the Magadi-Kiserian Road and detained in custody until they were presented in court.

The police officers were released the officers on a cash bail of Sh15,000 each while Mr Gicobo was admitted to a cash bail of Sh10 000. The cases will be mentioned on December 7, 2016 while the hearing has been set for January 13, 2017.

THEFT OF CHILDREN

Meanwhile, a woman who was arrested in Mombasa for the theft of three children will be detained in police custody for three days for further investigations.

Ms Isabella Wambani Walubengo alias Mutenya Walubengo Davis was arrested at Ukunda Mombasa on November 16 with a seven month old child and two others aged one and half years and three years.

Ms Walubengo was presented before a Kwale Court where police requested to have her detained for five days to enable them carryout further investigations.

The children who looked sickly were admitted at Msambweni Hospital for treatment. Ms Walubengo will be produced in court on November 28, 2016.
