Police probe alleged defilement of minor following SGR trip

Police in Nairobi have launched investigations following the disappearance of a 14-year-old girl who had travelled from Mombasa to the capital.

In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the lady travelled from the Coastal county on May 9, 2023, using the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train and disappeared while at the Nairobi Railway’s terminus.

Already, three people; two men identified as Mr Parkins Odero, Alfred Matumona and a woman identified as Ms Jackline Mangea have been nabbed in relation to the disappearance of the minor.

“According to the minor’s father, his daughter was traveling from Mombasa to Nairobi aboard the day’s 3pm train when she disappeared upon arrival in Nairobi later that night,” the DCI said.

DCI sleuths said the minor left the SGR terminus while in the company of Mr Odero after she arrived from Mombasa at 9:30pm.

They believe that she sneaked out of the station with the man who took her to Riruta Satellite, Dagoretti in Nairobi County.

Mr Odero is suspected to have defiled the minor on that night before he handed her to the second suspect identified as Mr Alfred Matumona who is also accused of defiling the victim.

The other suspect who was nabbed is a woman identified as Ms Jackline Mangera who is believed to have assisted in harbouring the minor.

The incident took place at a time when women leaders across Nyanza region are urging the judiciary to mete out stiff penalties to sex offenders.

Suba North Member of Parliament Millie Odhiambo, Homa Bay County Woman Representative Joyce Osogo and her Kisumu County counterpart Ruth Odinga said rising cases of defilement in the region have negatively impacted on the education of girls.

They noted that it was regrettable that Homa Bay was among the counties with the highest cases of teen pregnancies.

The legislators urged the courts to pass deterrent punishment to sex pests to enhance the fight against defilement and other forms of sexual offenses.
