Police probe MP over scuffle with rival during radio talk show
Bahati MP Onesmus Kimani Ngunjiri is being investigated over reports that he attacked and injured his rival at a local radio station in Nakuru.
Mr Ngunjiri and Mr John Mbugua, an independent candidate eyeing the Bahati seat, were attending a debate on a live talk show at the vernacular Ithaga FM station on Sunday night.
The two candidates had been invited to speak about their manifestos but clashed as the discussion got underway.
Mr Mbugua, who is disabled, claims the MP attacked him inside the studio by wrestling him to the ground and kicking him.
“He threw me to the ground and started kicking me while shouting vulgar words. In the midst of the confrontation, his bodyguard who was waiting outside came in and joined him in beating me,” he claimed.
Reached for comment, Mr Ngunjiri, refuted the reports and claimed his opponent had cooked up the story to seek sympathy votes.
Nakuru police boss Mr Joshua Omukata confirmed that police have launched investigations after Mr Mbugua reported it at the Central police station.
“Mr Mbugua reported to the police that he was kicked twice by Mr Ngunjiri after an argument during a live radio show,” the officer said.
He said action would be taken once investigations are concluded.
