Police probe mysterious death of officer outside a bar


Police have launched investigations into events leading to the death of an officer who died while being rushed to hospital after he was found injured outside a bar Malindi Sub County, Kilifi County.

According to a police report, the officer identified as Victor Baya, 27, who was attached to the Border Patrol Unit (BPU), was in the company of two of his cousins and had ordered for drinks before he excused himself.

Mr Baya died while being rushed to Malindi General Hospital by one resident of Watamu.

“He (the resident) reported that he was taking a patient to Malindi General Hospital using an ambulance. The patient died before arrival at the hospital,” the police report filed at Malindi police station reads in part.

According to the police, the deceased is based at Loima Sub County in Turkana County and had taken seven days off duty and decided to travel home when the unfortunate incident took place.

His body had visible injuries on both hands, on the face and on the neck. Blood was also emanating from the right ear.

Officers who visited Sabina Bar where the deceased was last seen alive established that he was in the company of Mr Juma Rashid Mbaru, 33 and Baraka Ngoka Kazungu, 30.

When they arrived at the bar the deceased ordered three bottles of beer which they served before he went out of the bar never to return.

“When the others went to check on him they found him in bad condition and they agreed to take him to hospital,” the police said in the report.

The body of the deceased was then rushed to Malindi General Hospital Morgue as detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) homicide wing commenced investigations.

The incident comes just a day after the body of another police officer was discovered inside his house in Mombasa County. The body of Mr Michael Mwita, who is attached to Kiembeni Police Station, was found inside his bathroom half-naked. The body was then taken to Jocham Hospital mortuary.
